While most first or second-year students opt for an on-campus meal plan to help with the transition to college, even some third and fourth-year students find that meal plans are a convenient, cost-effective way to plan meals while avoiding the hassle and expense of grocery shopping and cooking.

Undergraduate and graduate students living in off-campus apartments can select any of the six available meal plans if they plan on having some on-campus meals but are not required to do so.
No, UIUC students cannot change their meal plans during the semester.
University Housing institutes a deadline at the start of the semester by which time students can change their meal plan, but past that deadline, students cannot upgrade or downgrade their meal plan.
For the upcoming Spring 2023 semester, students can select a meal plan beginning on December 5, 2022.
The deadline to change is on February 11, 2023, a few weeks after the start of the semester.
Students can always reload their account with additional Dining Dollars, which can be done without changing the meal plan.

The closest quick-service grocery store to the UIUC campus is Target Grocery at 603 E Green Street, located near the intersection of Green and S Wright Street on the west side of the campus and Illini Union.
Other options a bit further from campus include the Schnucks at 109 N Mattis Ave and Harvest Market at 2029 S Neil Street, both located to the west.
